The Parkman Grange No. 305 Service Member of the month is Jerry A. Patterson. Jerry (J.J.) was born Feb. 2, 1981. He attended the McKusick Primary School in Parkman. He also attended the Parkman Baptist Church and was baptized there. Due to his parents moving to Dexter, he graduated from Dexter Regional High School in 1999.

In 1903, Judson Briggs hired George Bean of Monson to build a four story block, which came to take Brigg’s name. At one time, the block housed Minni Chase’s drugstore, Earl Gerrish’s grocery store, Hazel St. Louis’s clothing store, Peter Oberg’s pool room, Ernest Ladd’s office, Sam Cohen’s clothing store, the post office, the Masonic Room, the jail, the telephone exchange and an apartment, later occupied by Bill McGinnis and his family.

Sara McDonald Green was born in Brownville in 1886 and came to Katahdin Iron Works in 1906, later marrying Albert “Bert” Green, proprietor of the Silver Lake Hotel, which was still in use despite the fact that the Iron Works had ceased operations in 1891.

U.S. Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine)
The Maine Association of Agricultural Fairs began its centennial anniversary celebration during their annual meeting at the end of January and I am pleased to extend my congratulations. For 100 years, this venerable organization has championed the agricultural fair industry and the agricultural community of Maine – and for that our state is profoundly grateful.
