Pirates miss out on attempt to sweep No. 2 Stearns PDF  | Print |

    GUILFORD — It’s not often that a 2-10 squad looks forward to the No. 2 team in standings coming to town. But on May 15, the No. 12 Piscataquis Pirates baseball team was excited about the 8-2 Stearns Minutemen arriving in Guilford. Piscataquis had managed only two victories this season, but one of them was an April 27 9-4 victory against the Minuetmen.

    SWING AND A MISS — Piscataquis shortstop Tristan French takes a swing on a Zach Bouchard pitch on May 15. The Pirates scored one run on four hits as Bouchard pitched a complete game in leading Stearns to a 6-1 victory in Guilford. Each Pirate hit was a single. French, Spencer Martel, Cody White and Jeremy Bell accounted for the hits.

Foxcroft ‘s Ayala named MAWA Coach of the Year honor PDF  | Print |

    Foxcroft Academy wrestling coach Luis Ayala has been named the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance “Coach of the Year” for 2013. This is Ayala’s first time being honored by the MAWA, but he has been named COY by the Portland Press Herald in 2004 and 2011.

    COACH OF THE YEAR — Foxcroft wrestling coach Luis Ayala looks on while assistant coach Duane Law tends to an injured wrestler last season. Ayala recently was named the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance “Coach of the Year.” Ayala has guided the Ponies to five state titles since 2004 including the past three Class C State titles.

The  meet featured teams in Div. I-III.

    CARRABASSET VALLEY — Seven runners from the region took part in the Sugarloaf 15K on May 19. Gary Larson, 68, of Dover-Foxcroft, covered the approximate 9.3-mile course in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 39 seconds to finish 116th out of a field of 455.

    The Foxcroft Academy boys track and field team finished in third place out of 14 teams with a score of 89 points during a May 16 meet at the University of Maine in Orono.
    Donald Boyer led Foxcroft by winning three events. Boyer swept the hurdles by finishing first at 110 meters, in a time of 14.84 seconds, and at 300 meters, in 41.78 seconds. Boyer also won the long jump at a top distance of 20 feet, 1 inch. He added a fifth-place performance in the pole vault by clearing 9-06.

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — The SeDoMoCha Middle School Eagles continued the win streak as the team got the better of the unbeaten Howland to stay undefeated for the season. The Eagles were also victorious on May 6 in two exhibition games vs. the Sebasticook Wildcats.

    May 14: Foxcroft baseball won vs. Old Town 9-0. Jesse Provost tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts, and Hunter Law drove in three runs.
    Foxcroft softball lost vs. Old Town 14-2. Emily Higgins had an RBI.
    Penquis boys tennis lost vs. Penobscot 3-2 and 3-2. Tom Diaz recorded two wins.
    Penquis girls tennis lost vs. Penobscot 5-0 and 4-0.
